How to Handle A Bully? You Need To Stun Gun the Meanie

Empower yourself with confidence. Learn to handle mean people

We all know a bully or two. Every so often, we meet people who make comments and we are stunned to the extent that we don’t know how to respond. It could be a simple remark about your attire or even a derogatory comment.

It could also be a toxic boss or co-worker in the office.

Stumped in the moment, have you ever rewound the situation after the event? Played out what you could have said or how you could have acted?

Bullies or meanies, as I like to call them are essentially cowards or folks trying to raise their own self esteem by putting others down.

Important lesson from when I handled a bully in kindergarten

I remember as a kindergartner in New York, there was a meanie in my class. The good news was that she bullied everyone. The bad news was I got more than my fair share of nasty hurtful comments.

None of the parents took our complaints seriously. Stacy (name changed) was absolutely angelic when the parents were around.

In fact she had a wonderful mother who in spite of being a working mother helped out at the kiddie events the school organized for us.

On one occasion things got out of hand and I turned to my father whom I considered an authority.

Instead of promising to talk to the class teacher, he told me I had to learn to stand up for myself. He suggested I first find out from her why I was being given the special treatment.

In retrospect, I was being taught to first identify the root of the problem and then find a solution.

It took tremendous courage on my part but the next time she hit out at me, with great trepidation, I asked her, “What is it about me that you don’t like?”

Stacy the bully was stumped and ran off blustering incoherent words.

We did talk later about the root cause of her particular attention to me. Her parents were divorced, and she only met her father for a few days during the holidays. Her anger against me was because my father dropped me off to school every morning.

I told her my father was a busy person and the morning walk to school was the only time I really saw him during the week.  Stacy melted a bit when she heard I was in bed by the time he returned from work.

The happy ending to this story was that she targeted another kid and left me alone.

3 Questions guaranteed to stun the Bully

3 questions guaranteed to confuse a bully

Looking back, that was a lesson in assertiveness for me.  By asking for a clarification, we force the aggressor to back off while buying us time to think of an assertive response.  It is a far better technique than becoming defensive or crying.

So calmly ask the person who makes a derogatory remark

“What is it about my suggestion/idea/comment that you find ridiculous?’

“Can you tell me what it is about me that you find unacceptable?

“What is it about me that you don’t like?”

If the other person is targeting you to vent their frustrations, they will have to think twice.

Quite possibly, there is something in your behavior that is upsetting them and they are having trouble being articulate. This might be the beginning of clarification and change of behavior; theirs, yours or even both.

In my experience, the inability to handle mean people or bullies is often a reflection of lack of confidence in ourselves.

That’s where my Kindle book Self Confidence in 8 Steps is a valuable resource to help you build your self-esteem and confidence (learn more here).

When my clients first reach out to me, they are not in a very happy place, needing clarity about themselves, their desires, chosen vocation and what will give them peace of mind. They are drawn to me for the very reasons that I highlight in Who Is Karmic Ally Coaching.

Lack of recognition at work, inability to project themselves with confidence and frustration are just some of their professional problems that are playing havoc with other areas of their life. I really get it, because I’ve experienced that dark night of the Soul. I know firsthand the outcome of getting lost in my work rationalizing decisions that were detrimental to other aspects of my life.

Like you, I’ve struggled with and won battles of stress management, corporate politics, life balance and career decisions to emerge in a place where I can confidently say that I live my desired life according to my personal Manifesto and have created a business that provides me with a platform for my desired lifestyle and self-expression for myself. Helped me by making a priority of what needs to be done

I approached Vatsala at Karmic Ally Coaching because of Shiny Object Syndrome. I have always had this distract me and the tools Vatsala gave me to avoid this have been such a great help.

Vatsala Shukla of Karmic Ally Coaching helped me by making a priority of what needs to be done and what can really be put on the back burner. The result was I accomplish more on a daily basis and am finally on track with my business.

One thing I liked was her Time Management Tips because they helped me break down my day where I could fit everything necessary in and even have time for myself. I found the experience exhilarating because I was a procrastinator and now am a doer.

I would recommend Karmic Ally Coaching to people who need guidance in their business and to learn how to plan their days better to achieve their goals.

Good luck going forward.

Love and Blessings,

She is terrific at helping professionals handle change or challenges

Vatsala and I connected back in June of 2015 and later I came to know her better through a message she sent to me regarding my posts.

She is terrific at helping professionals handle change or challenges and then finding solutions to their life, career and business concerns.

She helped me as I struggled to learn LinkedIn and she provided guidance and support in the areas that I had yet to learn about. Her latest book, “5 Reasons your job hunt isn’t giving desired results: 10 Strategies to strengthen your game plan”, is a testament to her experience and skills as a mentor, coach, and author.

I recommend Vatsala for her ability to solve problems and search for solutions as she did for me when I didn’t know where to find the answers for myself. Thanks, Vatsala!

Given me a jumpstart to move on

Thank you Vatsala, for helping me structure my immediate goals to make my presence felt in the Organization. Your calm and composed style of listening to what I was thinking regarding being stuck in my current job, not able to make my presence felt in the Leadership circle of my company, is praiseworthy.

You smartly made me connect with you quickly, asking the right questions, pushing me to arrive at the specific activities I need to take up. You were able to dig in to my natural qualities and make specific mention of them. You have given me a jumpstart to move on, handle my current situation and ideas to make it work for my better future.

The power of choice, many times I felt that I cannot control how I felt when someone makes a silly comment, or ignores me. I preferred to keeping away from that person to eliminate any conflicts. but after talking to you and accepting that if it is not practical to eliminate such situations, I have the power to choose, taking small steps to ultimately emerge a WINNER..

I would do things differently than any normal person would have done, thus leading to MAKING MY PRESENCE FELT. Thanks a lot.

You are a treasure!

During a 14 day Product Challenge Vatsala was my online help person. If I hadn’t had her to look at my product, give advise, share her knowledge on how to get courses or products up and running online, I wouldn’t have been able to do it. So thank you once again Vatsala. You are a treasure!
