Anger management was bound to be discussed on social media after Will Smith’s slap was seen and heard around the world.

After Academy Award winner Will Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock during the Oscars Sunday night in response to a joke about Smith’s wife, a worldwide discussion has started. It’s all about how to manage anger before it escalates to violence.

Anger is defined as “an emotional state that varies in intensity from mild irritation to intense fury and rage,” according to Dr. Charles Spielberger, a psychologist who specializes in the study of anger.

It reminded me of the road rage incident that inspired this post years ago and the need to raise our threshold level. It becomes relevant if you’re trying to demonstrate Gravitas and composure is an issue for you.

This guy needs anger management training- like yesterday

I witnessed an amazing anger scene yesterday afternoon while driving home. There I was driving peacefully when the vehicles in front of me slowed down to a crawl thanks to a truck which was blocking the way.

A short while later, I saw an angry young man in a red tee shirt charging towards the truck.

Before I knew it, he had managed to climb up the wheel and was engaged in a fist cuff fight with the truck driver. That too while hanging precariously from the door of the truck!

The man’s anger had made him blind to the immediate consequences of his action.

No thought that this was a busy arterial road where cars were driving by fast. What if the truck driver got it into his head to drive off? He could fall down and get injured. Perhaps fatally?

I don’t know what happened next as I drove on but I did see a policeman walking in that direction. So I’m guessing the angry man would have found a place to cool his heels.

Anger in itself is neither good nor bad. It depends upon the type of anger.

If the anger leads to constructive actions, then it serves a purpose but if anger is destructive, then it has to be managed.

A powerful tip to raise your threshold level

There are many ways to manage anger but the best ones are those that help to raise our threshold to anger.

One technique is to use the color blue to help raise our resilience to anger.

Blue is cooling and relaxing in nature. A calming color, it is considered well for reducing anger.

Blue is also associated with the throat chakra, which deals with willpower and communication. The color blue can be used for throat problems, asthma, stress, and migraine.

This week, why not try using the colour blue and see how it affects your mood and anger levels?

I recommend 3 easy ways to test whether blue works for you without anybody even knowing it!

Try wearing clothes which are predominantly blue –say a blue shirt, blue tie, blue scarf, blue dress and even blue accessories. You don’t have to go completely blue – just an item of clothing or accessory.

If you feel angry and are practicing breathing methods to calm yourself, enhance your chosen method by visualizing blue colored scenes or objects– a blue sky, a blue ocean, a blue flower while practicing your calming technique.

Use a blue colored bulb in your lamp. When you want to relax, sit in a room which is otherwise completely dark and switch on your blue light lamp. You will notice a difference in the relaxation level achieved.

Using colors to manage anger may not be everyone’s cup of tea.

But wouldn’t it be fun to test the color blue for anger management? It might just work for you!

Hurry Sickness shows up in our everyday activities.

Driving home on the highway at the maximum allowed speed limit, I see cars whizzing past me at 80 or 90 kms/hr. I smile knowing we’ll meet up again at the traffic light that divides commuters taking a clover turn where I’ll exit and those going forward.

There’s a digital signboard near the traffic light that blinks “Speed Thrills but also Kills”.

Then I feel sad because I know many of the drivers are showing symptoms of Hurry Sickness. It’s a malady I used suffer from once upon a time. That was until I realized what it was doing to my health and general quality of life.

I didn’t know it at the time and guess not many of us do until we fall prey to stress-related illnesses.

By definition, Hurry Sickness is “a behavior pattern characterized by continual rushing and anxiousness; an overwhelming and continual sense of urgency.”

As if that isn’t bad enough, it’s also defined as “A malaise in which a person feels chronically short of time, and so tends to perform every task faster and to get flustered when encountering any kind of delay.”

Sounds familiar?

Origin of Hurry Sickness

The phrase Hurry Sickness was coined about 40 years ago by Dr. Meyer Friedman, a prominent cardiologist who noticed that all of his heart disease patients had common behavioral characteristics. The most obvious being that they were in a chronic rush. So much so that they wore the chairs in the doctor’s waiting room down on the front first from sitting at the edge of the seats.

He also coined the term ‘type A personality’.

Dr. Barton Sparagon, of the Meyer Friedman Institute, noted that chronic impatience associated with hurry sickness was damaging not only to our social environment, but to our physical health. It builds, and then it doesn’t take much to explode.

Hurry sickness, or chronic rush, should not be taken lightly because it contributes to stress-related illnesses including heart attacks, digestive problems, anxiety and immune disorders.

Could You Possibly be suffering from Hurry Sickness?

Suffering from Hurry Sickness or Chronic Rush is not a black or white illness. If you were to say that you didn’t suffer from it, then it’s either because you are not aware of it or are in denial.

In case you really don’t have Hurry Sickness, then hats off! Keep doing whatever it is you’re doing for the sake of your heart and health.

The majority of us suffer from it occasionally or chronically.

Here are some clues that you might need help.

Your internet speed going slow gets you crabby and nasty.

You check your emails first thing in the morning and last thing at night.

You take your dog for a walk and within 30 seconds get irritated. All because Rufus wants to smell around a bit before doing his Call of Nature.

You’re waiting at the traffic light and it turns green and you start counting the cars in front of you to see if you can jump in if it turns amber or whether you can move into a faster lane (who cares if you end up having an accident?)

You don’t want to wait too long at the check-out counter or in the bank line and start assessing which line is moving faster or is shorter (so what if you irritate everyone around you?)

You often find yourself interrupting the person with whom you are talking (you’re impatient and want to get to the point asap)

Your spouse, friends, or colleagues tell you to take it easy or slow down out of concern (how irritating!)

You talk fast, walk fast and pride yourself as a multi-tasker (so what if you don’t complete anything and confuse people around you?)

You’ve lost touch friends because you don’t have time to meet them (your idea of keeping in touch is liking and commenting on their Facebook posts even though you are in the same city and can easily meet up for a cup of coffee).

You feel proud that you thrive under pressure (you even say it in job interviews) but as soon as you go on vacation, you fall sick or take longer than normal to recover from the flu or a cold. It’s because you’ve played havoc with your body and its suffering from adrenal exhaustion.

Worse yet, you experience burnout.

Technology has a hand in abetting this malady.

One of the many reasons why there is an increase of cases of people, especially corporate professionals suffering from Hurry Sickness is the increasing prevalence of technology which speeds up things and compresses what we can do in a limited period of time. This creates a sense of urgency in its wake.

Think of what life was like before you had a computer, smart phone, washing machine, remote control television with recorder – you get the drift.

Technology is supposed to be our friend and support but we often forget that we are not machines, we are humans and we have different capacities and resilience levels.

Is there a cure for Hurry Sickness?

Yes, there is a cure for Chronic Rush but it isn’t a quick fix solution.

It requires becoming aware of the malady and being ready to make the required habit and lifestyle changes.

If you feel you require professional help, then reach out and seek it. There’s no shame in admitting you have a problem that needs to be solved and requires support.

In fact, it’s brave to want to change a habit that is ruining your health, family life and career.

Here are a few of things you can do to jumpstart your road to recovery.

I really want you to take action, so here are the tips – in slide form too!

10 doable actions you can easily take today to recover from hurry s-ickness – vatsala shukla for karmic ally coaching from Vatsala Shukla

Be grateful for all that is good in your life. Start a Gratitude Journal and make at least 3 entries before going to bed at night.

If you are planning to add a new task to your schedule, ask yourself – is this really important? If the answer is yes, then remove another less priority task so you don’t feel overwhelmed. Manage your time targets.

Take a morning walk and admire the trees and flowers. Observe life. Try the Nature Walking Meditation.

Be positive. If something is not going as planned, think of something that is going right and work from a place of ‘it can be done’.

Do breath work exercises, especially pranayam to give your brain more oxygen to keep it productive.

Make it a point to take a break for 5 minutes every hour. Get up from your desk and walk around. Go make yourself a cup of tea or other activity that gives you a break.

Put your mobile phone on silent mode while eating and chat with your family members.

Create boundaries and “non-negotiables”. Spend as much time as you can doing things you are positive about.

See your friends in the real world. Did you know that a lack of or few social relationships increases your mortality rate?

Be realistic – Rome wasn’t built in a day. You have time to get things done when you set achievable goals with a stretch.

With a little effort on your part, you’ll find you have all the time in the world to focus on what really matters. Hurry Sickness will be a thing of the past. You’ll also know when you are returning to bad habits and can take preventive measures.

Which action will you start today to cure your Hurry Sickness?

Last weekend I decided to combine a spot of dusting with rearranging my bookshelves. True to habit, I started perusing through a couple of old treasured book. I came across a book I’d purchased almost a decade ago out of sheer curiosity called Spiritual Housecleaning by Kathryn L Robyn.

Nothing along the lines of a rocket science manual or New Age remedies, but full of simple details on systematic housecleaning.

It incorporated spirituality and practical rituals for making one’s home a sacred space while helping to de-clutter the mind, improve energy levels and organize thoughts.

(You can click on the book image to find out the contents of the book)

As I skimmed, it struck me how clutter can actually create more stress and the need to be organized.

I mean, how many times have you gotten irritated because you couldn’t find your pen, paper, an important document or even your car keys?

It happened to me on numerous occasions as a student.

While I found excuses to avoid clearing up the mess with phrases like ‘there’s a method in my madness’, deep down I knew better. Now I have a weekly desk de-clutter scheduled on my weekend To Do List using a technique that I outline in this post.

I have followed this practice faithfully for the last two decades. It is so embedded in my psyche that I guess it is now a sacred ritual for me.

One benefit I’ve noticed is the increased focus, intent of purpose and a more organized manner of executing my tasks.

The state of a desk and surrounding area says a lot about a person’s frame of mind.

When I visit offices for meetings, I sense things about the person I am supposed to meet based upon the state of their desk. I sense chaos at the sight of heaps of papers, files & dossiers on desktops, not an organized, focused and logical person.

Perhaps the person has a personal foolproof method here, but I am unable to understand it.

My advice to anyone who has a similar desk whether in a corporate office or a home office, or even as a student is – get organized.

If you work in an office, come to work five minutes early and organize everything.

Do it every time you have a clutter which impedes finding the ringing telephone or the car keys under a mountain of papers. It will save a lot of valuable time & increase your work efficiency not to mention reduce avoidable stress.

Believe it or not, there are life coaches who actually specialize in assisting clients to de-clutter.

This is indicative of a serious problem out there needing a solution. A cluttered desk is often associated with signs of a disorganized, cluttered mind and a symptom of a deeper underlying problem.

One of the tips offered by Feng Shui experts for improving the harmony of your environment is to rid yourself of clutter. This includes broken objects and those things that you don’t use. There is something in de-cluttering, whichever way you look at it.

You might think that having a cluttered home, workspace or even car is not a big deal and that you will get around to cleaning up when you have the time and energy.

Have you ever considered the impression that it makes on others and how they view you?

If not for yourself, then perhaps for the sake of appearances in front of others, one could possibly consider a scheduled de-clutter session? Put it into your weekly to do list and reward yourself on completion of this important task.

Depending upon what your clutter is composed of and where it is appearing in your life, it can tell a lot about you, your personality, and the state of your life and areas of stress requiring addressing.

As an example, I am going to refer to 3 areas though there are of course many others one can think of.

Office/workspace clutter

Your office space, whether it is a home office or in a corporate office represents your area professional growth. Too much clutter and disorganization indicate a sense of lack of control over your career path including being overwhelmed and job dissatisfaction.

Your Vehicle – clutter

Your vehicle is symbolic of your progress and movement in life. Even in dream analysis, the vehicle is symbolic of your body, which houses your soul. Clutter in this area could indicate that you are subconsciously not willing to move ahead and are restricted by the past or personal limiting beliefs.

Financial clutter

Financial clutter takes the form of pending bills be they utility bills, credit card bills, poor savings habits, unread magazine subscriptions (the ones where you want the free gift for whatever reason but don’t read the magazine) and bad spending habits.

It can point towards your inner insecurity and worries about your financial future. For some, it is transference of their inner emotional turmoil onto material goods under the excuse of retail therapy instead of facing the problems that they might have and dealing with situations head on.

The key to handling clutter and the related stress it creates is to firstly get rid of the clutter –

– If they are objects that need to be thrown away, just throw them away;

– Are there items lying around that you don’t use but can be useful to others? Donate them to a worthy organization that can use them; or

– Sell your usable clutter on the numerous websites available for resale. Convert your clutter into good cash. (I have yet to meet a person who says they have enough cash or don’t need more cash!)

On a more long-term basis, address the emotional issues that underlie the clutter in the first place.

If you can deal with it yourself that is great. Otherwise consider seeking help from family, friends and, if required, even professional help whether it is a coach, counselor or therapist.

With this two-pronged approach, you can rid yourself of clutter for good and remedy an often-overlooked stress trigger.

I’m curious, have you ever had a clutter issue? How did you deal with it?
