I like this. To me, it speaks to the balance required to excel in any arena. I especially appreciate your example of charismatic politicians and celebrities and could picture President Obama taking a pause each time he changes gears. Thanks.

Taking a moment to be silent before you speak brings power to your words once you share them, just as being silent while listening to others does the same for theirs.

As a counselor I use silence to hold space for clients and believe it is an art form – too much silence creates awkwardness and pressure on the client, not enough silence can interrupt a healing or transformative process. It has been interesting to teach this art to new social workers I mentor. Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom!

What an interesting and insightful article, Vatsala. I have always been a Chatty Cathy. You know, I’m always talking. When I do have the opportunity to speak in front of others, my silence does gain attention. You’re right – silence is a powerful leadership skill.
