I remember way back in 1985 they did a survey of college students and came up with the horrific fact that the majority of students thought Indira Gandhi and Mahatma Gandhi were related! Things are different now thanks to media using Independence and Republic Days to reinforce history in the viewers mind.

I recently wrote a story for my daughters school magazine on India yesterday today and tomorrow. In the today part I had written “We now can even LIKE the mahatma on Facebook” hinting that Independence has got a lot more personal and real to us today then it was for our generation, where it was merely a part of our history book in school.

I feel delight knowing the history of India’s independence has your mom as a three-year old participating. All history could use a little personal narrative to tap on the reader’s heart.
