Fragrance when applied the right way can become a powerful tool to help us with our appearance and in creating the right impression. This in turn enables us to exude executive presence.
The intersection of fragrance or perfume and executive presence is where personal fragrance is used strategically to enhance one’s professional image and overall presence in the workplace.
Perfume, when chosen and worn appropriately, can contribute positively to how individuals are perceived in professional settings, aligning with the attributes of confidence, professionalism, and sophistication that define executive presence.
Hi, I’m Vatsala Shukla from Karmic Ally Coaching and the reason I mentioned appropriately is because if you’re not careful, its application can boomerang on you – big time.
Don’t give your co-workers the impression you’ve had a fragrance bath
Many years ago, when I was working in the local head office of an energy company, one of the senior analysts walked into my office requesting permission to stay a while so he could breathe.
Puzzled as I was, I allowed it while wondering if I should call for help in case he was having an asthmatic attack.
It turned out one of our new female interns was wearing a strong perfume. This was giving him a headache and he was feeling dizzy.
Since I was wearing perfume too, I wasn’t quite sure what had happened. Then he muttered that she didn’t have to have a bath in perfume for work.
It was almost 5 in the evening so I guessed it must have been a pretty heavy one.
Out of curiosity, I sauntered up to her desk in the open office and got a serious whiff of the problem.
I mentioned the perfume was nice and inquired about the name of the scent. After that, I advised her to keep it for evening time and use just a drop or two.
The poor intern went red in the face and apologized profusely. She had been wondering what was wrong because she had seen the senior analyst walking into my room. On top of it she was wondering why people were avoiding coming near her that day.
The answer was clear and being a bright woman, she mastered perfume application 101 that day.
Okay, so this was an extreme case.
However, fragrance can be used, especially by women professionals while navigating workplace challenges in a unique way.
Women professionals often face unique challenges
These range from battling self-doubt and managing stress to striving for professional recognition and maintaining work-life balance.
Fragrance, while subtle, can be a powerful tool to help overcome these challenges by boosting confidence, reducing stress, and reinforcing a positive professional image.
I’ve got an entire free report called The Fragrance Code that guides you in selecting fragrances that align with your personal style and professional image and what works for different workplace settings and environments.
I’ll share the link to that report later.
Here are 7 ways fragrance can address specific workplace challenges women may face:
1. Overcoming self-doubt and Impostor Syndrome
Now many women experience self-doubt or impostor syndrome, feeling they are not competent as their colleagues perceive them to be.
And here’s how Fragrance helps. Firstly, as a confidence boost.
A signature fragrance can serve as a personal confidence booster. Applying a scent associated with positive experiences or success can help women feel more secure in their abilities.
An example is a scent that has Vetiver. That would work well. The earthy, sophisticated fragrance will help you feel grounded and composed. Used when feeling self-doubt, it can become an anchor for your confidence, reminding you of your capabilities and professionalism.
2. Managing stress and anxiety
Now, high-pressure work environments and tight deadlines can lead to stress and anxiety, impacting performance and well-being.
Fragrance helps by giving you a calming effect.
Scents like lavender, chamomile, and sandalwood are known for their calming properties. Using these scents can help reduce anxiety and promote a sense of calm. So, a lavender-scented roll-on or mist can be applied during breaks to alleviate stress and maintain composure.
3. Enhancing Professional Presence
Maintaining a strong, professional presence is crucial for career advancement but can be challenging, especially in male-dominated industries.
Here, having a Signature Scent will help you. Signature scents are a distinctive, sophisticated fragrance that can become part of a woman’s professional identity, helping her to stand out and be memorable.
My favourite example is Chanel No. 5 which is a classic scent that exudes sophistication and can help reinforce a polished, professional image.
4. Boosting Energy and Focus
Long workdays and extensive meetings can lead to fatigue and decreased productivity.
So, you want an invigorating scent. Citrus, peppermint, and eucalyptus scents can invigorate the senses, improving alertness and concentration.
For example, a spritz of Jo Malone London Lime Basil & Mandarin can refresh and energize, helping to maintain focus throughout the day.
5. Work-Life Balance
Now you already know that balancing professional responsibilities with personal life can be challenging and can lead to burnout.
Here, fragrance can help as a Transition Ritual. Using different scents for work and home can help create a mental transition between professional and personal time, promoting a healthier work-life balance.
So, for example, using a light, fresh fragrance like Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue for work and a calming, cozy scent like Maison Margiela Replica By the Fireplace at home can help delineate these boundaries.
6. Navigating Social Dynamics
Building and maintaining positive workplace relationships is essential but can be tricky, especially in competitive environments.
And how does Fragrance help here?
By having an approachable scent. Wearing approachable and pleasant scents can make interactions more enjoyable and help in building rapport with colleagues.
So for example, Marc Jacobs Daisy is a light, inviting floral fragrance that can make social interactions more pleasant and help create a positive impression.
7. Establishing Authority and Respect
Now here the challenge is that you know gaining respect and establishing authority, especially in leadership roles, can be challenging for women.
For fragrance, use powerful scents. Strong, assertive fragrances can help project authority and confidence and reinforce a woman’s leadership presence.
For example, Yves Saint Laurent’s Libre combines lavender essence with orange blossom and musk, creating a bold and authoritative scent that commands respect.
Now I’ve covered seven challenges but there are some practical tips too for using fragrance in the workplace.
The first one is to choose appropriate scents. Select fragrances that are suitable for the workplace, avoiding overly strong or controversial scents.
Secondly, apply sparingly. Less is more when it comes to fragrance application in professional settings. A light spritz on pulse points is usually sufficient.
Thirdly, consider the environment. Be mindful of the work environment and any scent sensitivities of colleagues. In shared or open spaces, opt for lighter, more subtle fragrances.
Fourthly, establish a routine. Incorporate fragrance into your daily routine as a form of self-care and a confidence ritual.
Fifth, use complementary products. Layering fragranced products like body lotions and shower gels can enhance the scent without being overpowering.
Sixth, be aware of and respect Fragrance-Free Zones. Some environments, like hospitals and schools may have fragrance-free policies due to allergies or sensitivities. Please respect them.
The seventh and a very important one is personal chemistry, because fragrance interacts with your skin’s natural oils, which can affect how a scent develops. So test perfumes to see how they wear over time.
As a parting word, always remember that fragrance can be a versatile tool to help women navigate and overcome various workplace challenges.
Scents can play a pivotal role in enhancing confidence and creating a positive mindset.
So, choosing the right scents and incorporating them thoughtfully into routines, women can boost their confidence, manage stress, enhance their professional presence, and create a positive and memorable impression in their work environments.
