It's amazing how many bullies get away with bad behavior at the workplace, Cindy, and it breaks my heart when women gang up against another female colleague. I love the way you transferred your anger into a more productive activity and kept the home warm during the winter.

I believe we worked in the same corporate office! We share many of the same stories from work. In one office in particular, we had a group of 'mean girls' that would go on the attack. By simply focusing on the tasks at hand, not falling prey for their bait and keeping to myself (not adding to the office drama) I was able to survive. Our manager was the biggest bully in the office. Once it was made clear that upper management was quote unquote okay with her behavior, I was more determined to place focus on the work I did and avoid the workplace politics. And yes, I was her target more times than I can count. When I'd get home from work, I'd use the stress and anger to help me split firewood with an ax. Anger management kept my home warm during the winter months.

I can relate to your experience, Barb. I felt the same way on my last day at the last corporate job I held and smiled benevolently at the office building as I drove away knowing that a new adventure was beginning. I don't want to sound theatrical but it was a driving into the sunset moment. :) There are still moments of uncertainty but the fear is missing because I use the Dale Carnegie method of asking myself - what's the worst thing that can happen?

The first Monday of my "official" retirement from the work world was such a thrill that words could not adequately capture it. Let's just say "joy" took on a whole new meaning. Now I welcome change and surprises in every day. Life should be an adventure, not just something we have to survive. My motto is: if you hate Monday, find out why, change it and create the Monday you want (and all the other days of the week as well).

I agree with Andrea. Sometimes I can identify the fear, but can't get past it. Having a supporting & love friend (or confidant) can help me process it. It doesn't mean it goes away immediately, but with their insight I can see it from another perspective and then, perhaps, approach it from a different view point.
Thanks.
:)

Thank you Andrea for the extra tip. Talking to a trusted and sympathetic ear does take the sting out of the fear and puts it is perspective. That helps to consider and take action on the root cause for the fear.

Gee I'd like to reply but I'm just so afraid.... (just kidding!) Some fears are nameless; we know there's some negative emotion attached to an action that it overtakes our calm ability to break it down into cause and solution. I've found that having someone to talk with and speak about the fear out loud is a great way to reduce its power over me. A sympathetic ear is a great place to start when confronting fears, intangible and otherwise.
