I’m guessing you’re most probably applying tactics without the foundations of a goal or a strategy.
Many people get confused between “strategy” and “tactics” whether in business or their career aspirations. So let’s get clear about the difference first.
According to Wikipedia:
The terms tactic and strategy are often confused: tactics are the actual means used to gain an objective, while strategy is the overall campaign plan, which may involve complex operational patterns, activity, and decision-making that govern tactical execution.
That means, when we talk about strategy, it’s very high level and shouldn’t change often.
Tactics are low level and will probably change often.
Let’s take an example.
Goal or Objective: Get selected for a new senior level position that is opening up because the present incumbent is being sent on a 2-year overseas assignment.
Strategy: Make sure the boss knows I’m the best candidate for the opening and can do an awesome job by raising my visibility.
So far so good.
But how are you going to make sure the boss knows you’re the best candidate?
That’s where tactics become important. Here’s one way to approach it.
Tactics: Demonstrate I’ve overgrown my current position and should be considered for the next rung up the corporate ladder. Raise my visibility at work by raising my Executive Presence.
So when you show your boss during your appraisal that you’re ready for the next promotion and raise your Executive Presence, you are making tactical moves. The strategy and goal are unchanged.
Sadly what most people do is put the cart in front of the horse and engage in tactics that won’t achieve their objective because there isn’t a strategy.
Like sending out invitations to strangers on LinkedIn and then once accepted shoot off messages with resumes and say they need a job. And THEN wonder what went wrong when the other person goes quiet.
That’s not strategy, it’s a poorly executed tactic.
