Women have come a long way in terms of equality but we still have a lot to do for the future generations, Rachel.

When it comes to champions and mentors, the former can often become the latter too in the champion/protégé relationship. There are, however, fundamental differences between mentors and champions.

In a mentor/ mentee relationship, the mentee receives most of the benefits and the mentor expects little in return. In a champion/ protégé relationship, both people make a greater commitment to each other and have more at stake. Championing is a deeper more reciprocal relationship that requires mutual trust.

I am not sure of the difference you make between a mentor and a champion. I do think women need a support system, in their lives and work, and that can come from mentors or supportive groups. We do live in the age of equality but it is an equality in IDEA, not always in reality. Women are still payed less than men, promoted less than men, taken less seriously and expected to work harder at work and at home. We still have a long way to go to achieve real equality and being connected with other like minded women who empower each other is very important.

In reply to Laura. Finding the right mentor is even more important, Laura. There are mentors and champions who try to mold their protege in their own image while others who provide a space for the mentee to grow. One needs to find the right one for our stage of career.

We sure do have a mindset problem but it won’t hurt either to have mentors.
This who have the potential to do great should be mentored and championed, Male or female. Women however need more help to get over the effects of the damaging stereotypes they are faced with. Only then cam they emerge.
